Used or new scaffolding: quality check and price indicators
Buying scaffolding is a capital decision whether you run a scaffolding company, a roofing or painting business, or a single renovation project. One question comes up every time: new or used? There is no general answer, but there is a clear way to work it out. It depends on how hard the material will be used, how long you plan to keep it, which system you already own and how carefully the used stock has been checked.
What speaks for used scaffolding
- Lower entry cost: money stays free for vehicles, a yard or staff.
- Available quickly: used stock exists already and does not have to be produced first.
- Suits small and medium firms: a first fleet or a second set for parallel sites can be built up without large debt.
- Extends what you own: extra bays, frames or decks for a system already in your yard.
- Reuse instead of scrap: each frame that goes back into service avoids new steel and new zinc. See reusing scaffolding.
The drawbacks are just as real. Used parts can be worn, they carry marks from earlier jobs, and certain series or lengths may be hard to find in quantity. Above all, used material is only as good as the check it has been through. Without a careful inspection, you buy someone else's rejects.
What speaks for new scaffolding
- Full service life from day one and no traces of use.
- Planning certainty: one production batch, one set of documents, consistent condition.
- Long-term additions: the same series can be bought again for years.
- High utilisation: for fleets that are out on site every working day, new material pays back over its long life.
The disadvantages: higher purchase price, delivery times depending on production, and less appeal for a one-off project on a tight budget.
The quality check: when used makes sense
Used scaffolding is a good buy when four conditions are met. Treat them as a filter before you compare prices.
1. Condition of the components
- No visible deformation, no deep corrosion, no dents in legs or ledgers.
- Locking devices, hooks and pins work properly.
- Decks without cracks, sag or worn hooks; plywood without rot or swelling.
- Welds without cracks, especially at hooks, claws and transoms.
2. One system, one series
All parts must come from the same system family, with matching bay sizes. A cheap lot made up of three systems costs more in the end, because some of it cannot be used. Legible stamps let you trace manufacturer and system, so the right assembly instructions can be found.
3. A seller you can check
Prefer stock that has been inspected and sorted, with clear parts lists and photos. Ask how the check was done and what happens to rejected items. A full company address and a yard you can visit are basic signs of a serious seller. At CETRAC, the steps are described on our quality page.
4. Quantities and completeness
Are frames, guard rails, decks and braces complete? Are the brackets, couplers, base jacks, ties and small parts included? A square-metre figure alone does not answer this; a parts list does. Our purchase checklist goes through all 30 points.
Price indicators
Prices depend on system, condition, package size and how complete the set is. Small sets cost more per square metre because the fixed effort for picking, checking and loading is spread over fewer parts. As a guide, CETRAC's indicative prices in October 2026 are:
| Material | Indicative price per m² (net) | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Used frame scaffolding, complete package | approx. €30–40, cheaper on large areas | available from stock |
| New CETRAC SPEED frame scaffold | approx. €33–40 | can be ordered; German approval (DIBt) granted |
| New CETRAC MODUX and MGS-A | approx. €48–62 | available from 2027; approval procedure not yet completed |
All figures exclude VAT and freight and are indications, not quotes. Two things stand out. First, a used package for a large area can come out noticeably cheaper per square metre than a small one. Second, the gap between used and new frame scaffolding is narrower than many buyers expect, so it is worth pricing both before deciding. Put your own measurements into the scaffolding calculator to see a parts list with an indicative total.
Material leaves our yard in Leipzig: European customers receive it by lorry, overseas customers in a container that sails from a European port. A company in another EU country that quotes its VAT number gets an invoice free of German VAT, and outside the EU the local import taxes and duties apply on arrival.
Who each option suits
| Buyer | Used | New |
|---|---|---|
| Trades firm with a small fleet | first choice for a first set | when the fleet is to grow in one series |
| Start-up or side business | keeps capital free | rarely needed at the start |
| Private project | often enough, can be resold afterwards | only for repeated use |
| Company topping up its yard | matching parts for an existing system | where a series is to be continued for years |
| Large fleet, high utilisation | for peaks and short-term projects | for long-term fleet planning |
By application, used parts are well suited to facade scaffolds, project top-ups of modular scaffolding, mobile towers and working platforms, and replacements for damaged parts. New parts make most sense for long-term fleet planning and for continuing one series over many years.
Combining used and new, and getting value back later
Used and new parts can be combined as long as everything belongs to the same system family and the manufacturer's documentation covers it. This is common in practice: a company buys a used base package and adds new parts as the order book grows.
The exit matters as much as the entry. Two CETRAC options help here:
- Rebuy: if you bought the scaffolding from us and return it in technically flawless order within five years, we take it back; the buy-back price is the list price minus 15 %.
- Exchange: owners of frame scaffolding can trade it in against MGS-A. The ratios: each frame you hand in is worth one MGS-A standard, guard rails are swapped at 1:1, and two diagonals or two toe boards are exchanged for one MGS-A part (2:1). The first 25 companies to sign up swap everything at 1:1 and are charged only for the extra parts they need on top. The terms are set out on the scaffolding exchange page.
Scaffolding you no longer need can also be sold to us directly. A rough estimate of what is in your yard will do, no counted inventory; we fix the price per component beforehand and pay for what ends up on the truck. Find out more under selling scaffolding. The current used offer is under used scaffolding for sale, and the new systems are presented on new CETRAC scaffolding.
