Where to buy used scaffolding and formwork

Scaffolding and formwork from established manufacturers are built to last for decades. A steel frame loses a large part of its market price after the first job, but very little of its technical value. That gap is what makes the used market attractive for contractors who calculate tightly. The question is not whether to buy used, but where, and how to avoid paying for parts that cannot go back on site.

The main sources compared

SourceStrengthsRisks
Manufacturer or new-material dealerUniform condition, full documentation, long service lifeHighest price, delivery times in busy seasons
Specialist dealer in used materialChecked and sorted stock, complete packages, advice, export logisticsCondition grades differ between dealers, so ask what was checked
Online auctions and classified adsOccasional low pricesNo technical check, unknown system, missing accessories, collection at your expense
Contractors selling a fleet or closing downLarge quantities at once, known historyMixed systems, worn parts mixed with good ones, sorting effort
Hire companies renewing their fleetRegularly maintained material, large lotsOften heavily used, sold as seen

For professional use, inspected material from a specialist dealer usually strikes a sensible balance between price and risk. Brand material bought used is commonly 30–60 % below the new list price, depending on system, condition and quantity.

Why the cheap auction lot can be expensive

A pallet of frames at a bargain price looks tempting in the photos. Typical problems only show up on delivery:

  • Damage: bent frames, cracked welds, deformed decks, worn connections, deep corrosion.
  • No markings: parts without a legible manufacturer stamp cannot be assigned to an approved system.
  • Mixed systems: components that look alike but differ in tube wall thickness, material or connection dimensions.
  • Missing accessories: frames and decks without diagonals, guard rails, base jacks or ties, which then have to be bought separately, often at a higher unit price.
  • Logistics: collection, loading equipment and transport are your problem.

Damaged load-bearing parts must not be straightened and reused; they belong in the scrap pile. A lot that loses a fifth of its parts during sorting is no bargain. Which defects rule a part out is set out in wear on scaffold parts.

Packages, lots and single parts

Price per unit drops when you take larger lots. Pre-configured packages, for example a complete set of frame scaffolding for a house or 100 m² of wall formwork with accessories, are normally priced below the sum of the same parts bought singly. They also solve the completeness problem because the composition is already worked out.

  • Scaffolding packages for houses and small apartment blocks;
  • single parts to extend a fleet you already own, sold by the piece;
  • used and refurbished formwork from the used formwork range, including refurbished panels.

If you already have a parts list or a drawing, send it in. A dealer can then put together a mix of used parts, or new material where that suits the job better.

Condition grades to ask about

Used is not a single grade. Ask the seller to state the condition explicitly:

  1. Site-ready used: inspected, functional, with visible traces of use such as concrete residue or minor surface wear.
  2. Refurbished: cleaned and repaired; for formwork panels this can mean new plywood facing on the original frame.
  3. New: unused material, for example new CETRAC SPEED frame scaffolding with German approval (DIBt), or new formwork parts.

The criteria CETRAC applies, from approval status and readable stamps to deformation, corrosion and keeping systems apart, are listed on the quality page.

Used formwork: what to look at

Formwork wears differently from scaffolding. Wall and slab panels from Doka, PERI, Meva or Harsco/Hünnebeck are judged by the frame (straight, with intact edges and tie holes) and by the facing, which determines the concrete finish. Timber beams are checked for cracks, broken flanges and moisture damage; floor props for straight inner tubes, working threads and intact pins. More detail is in our guide on buying used formwork.

Buying from abroad

Germany and its neighbours have a large market for used system scaffolding and formwork, and contractors from other regions regularly source material there. When buying across borders, clarify these points before the order:

  • Incoterm and freight: CETRAC prices are ex works Leipzig. Inside Europe the goods travel by truck; overseas orders are packed into 20 or 40-foot containers and leave through a European port.
  • VAT: a company in another EU state that quotes a valid VAT number receives an invoice without German VAT. Deliveries leaving the EU carry no German VAT either; the buyer settles import VAT and customs duty in the destination country.
  • Payment: payment before loading is standard for used material; see delivery and payment.
  • Local rules: system scaffolds are erected to the manufacturer's instructions; for tube and fitting in the UK, the NASC guidance TG20 is the usual reference. Check what your local regulations require.
  • Documentation: ask for photos of typical parts, the system name and access to the instructions for assembly and use.

Checklist for comparing offers

QuestionWhy it matters
Which system and manufacturer exactly?Determines compatibility with your fleet and the instructions that apply
Was every part inspected, and to what criteria?Avoids paying for scrap
Is the package complete, including ties and access?Missing small parts are expensive to buy later
Price per m² or per piece, net or gross?Only comparable offers can be compared
Freight, loading and payment terms? Can change the total by a significant amount
What happens to the material afterwards?Resale or buy-back fixes the exit value

The last point is easy to forget. For CETRAC's own material, the exit is fixed in advance: parts returned technically perfect within five years are repurchased at 15 % under list price. Frequently asked questions

Where is the safest place to buy used scaffolding?
From a specialist dealer that inspects every part and sells complete, system-pure packages. Auctions and private sales rarely include a technical check.
Is used scaffolding safe to use?
Yes, if each part is undamaged, legibly marked and belongs to an approved system erected to its instructions. Bent or cracked parts must be scrapped, not straightened.
How much cheaper is used scaffolding than new?
Used brand material is commonly 30–60 % below the new list price, depending on system, condition and quantity. As a guide, complete used frame packages at CETRAC sit around €30–40 per m², net of VAT.
Can I send my own parts list?
Yes. Send a parts list or a drawing and you receive a quotation for matching used parts, or new material where it suits better.
Does CETRAC ship outside Europe?
Yes. Containers of 20 or 40 feet leave from a European seaport, with the goods priced ex works Leipzig; import taxes and duties fall due in the buyer's country.
